Best Time to Visit Uvita, Costa Rica
The short answer: there's no bad time. Uvita sits on Costa Rica's south Pacific coast, where the rainforest meets Marino Ballena National Park — and every season offers a different reason to come. Here's how to choose yours.
Dry season: December through April
This is Uvita's classic postcard weather — sunny mornings, calm seas and reliably dry days. It's the best window for beach days at Playa Ballena, snorkeling and long afternoons by the pool. It's also peak season: flights and vacation rentals in Uvita book earliest for Christmas, New Year's and Easter week, so plan several months ahead.
Green season: May through November
Our personal favorite. The hills around Uvita turn impossibly green, waterfalls like Nauyaca and the Uvita Waterfall run full, and the crowds thin out. The "rain" is usually a brief afternoon shower — often just 5–10 minutes — leaving mornings bright and evenings dramatic. If you want the rainforest at its most alive and quieter beaches, come now.
Whale season: twice a year
Uvita is one of the few places on Earth with two humpback whale seasons. Southern-hemisphere humpbacks arrive roughly July through November — with August and September the peak months — and northern-hemisphere whales visit December through March.
