First-Time Visitor's Guide to Uvita, Costa Rica
Uvita is what many people picture when they imagine Costa Rica — rainforest hills meeting a whale-filled Pacific bay — but it's still refreshingly uncrowded compared to the famous northern beach towns. Here's what first-timers should know.
Getting here
Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, then drive about 3.5 hours south on the Costanera Sur Highway — a scenic, fully paved coastal road passing Jacó and Manuel Antonio. Rent a car: it's the difference between seeing one beach and seeing the whole Costa Ballena. You don't need 4x4 for Uvita's main sights. Shuttles and the Tracopa bus run from San José too if you'd rather not drive.
When to come
December–April is the sunny dry season; May–November is the green season with brief afternoon showers and lusher forest. Humpback whales visit twice a year — July–November (peak August–September) and December–March. Full details in our best time to visit guide.
The three things you shouldn't miss
1. Walk the Whale's Tail in Marino Ballena National Park at low tide. 2. Take a whale-watching tour in season — this is one of the best places on Earth for it. 3. Eat dinner in Ojochal, the rainforest village with an improbably great restaurant scene 15 minutes south.
Practical tips
Bring a card for the national park entrance ($6 + tax, card only) and some colones for parking lots and sodas. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain layer in green season, and shoes you can get wet. Mornings are for wildlife — howler monkeys are your alarm clock — and most days wind down early. Tap water is safe in most of the area, and Wi-Fi is widely available.

Stay on the hillside if you can — that's where the views are.
