Popular Costa Rican Phrases
Buenas!
A greeting you’ll hear upon entering many spaces. Short for Buenas dias, tardes or noches. It comes across at anytime as a welcoming hello.
Pura vida
The direct translation is “pure life”, but Costa Rica has basically adopted this phrase for everything. It’s not surprising to hear it as a “hello” or “goodbye”. Personally, I think the phrase captures the essence of Costa Rica.
Soda
A small, local eatery in Costa Rica, often family-run, that serves traditional Costa Rican meals at affordable prices. You really should stop at a Soda – they are wonderful.
Tico/Tica
The colloquial term for a Costa Rican man (Tico) or woman (Tica). Costa Ricans often use this to refer to themselves. If you use this phrase – don’t mix them up!
Mae
A casual term for “dude” or “bro,” often used in conversations between friends. It’s similar to saying “buddy” or “mate.” If you want to be a local, you can always say, “Hola, Mae” or “Pura vida, Mae!”
Tuanis
A Costa Rican slang word that means “cool” or “awesome.” It’s used to describe something good or impressive.
Estar en todas
Translates to “be in everything,” and it means someone is very reliable or always involved and aware of what’s going on.
